What one host costs

Datadog prices Infrastructure and APM per host, and its $31 APM rate applies to hosts that also carry Infrastructure Pro. Polartrace charges one flat rate past your included hosts, with APM, logs and host metrics inside it.

Which host count gets billed

The same month on both sides: 20 hosts every day, one launch day autoscaled to 40. Datadog bills the high-water mark of hourly host counts after dropping only the top 1% of hours, so a day-long spike sets the bill. Polartrace bills the 95th percentile of daily distinct hosts, so it never does.

How 100 GB of logs is billed

Datadog bills logs twice, per GB to ingest them and per million events to index them for search. Polartrace has one per-GB price that covers ingest and search, and data under your allowance is free.

Is Polartrace a drop-in Datadog replacement?
For Node.js and Python services needing APM, distributed tracing, request logs, host metrics, Kubernetes monitoring and Slack/email alerting - yes, and at a fraction of the list price. If you depend on RUM, synthetics, profiling, or agents for other languages, Datadog's broader catalog is currently the better fit.
Where does the ~60% saving come from?
Mostly hosts. At annual list Datadog bills $15/host for Infrastructure Pro plus $31/host for APM attached to it, $46 per host before logs (standalone APM without infrastructure is $36/host). Polartrace includes APM and logs in one subscription and charges a flat $20 per host past your included allowance, with billable hosts measured at the 95th percentile of daily distinct hosts rather than Datadog's high-water mark of hourly counts.
How is the comparison calculated?
Against Datadog's 2026 published list rates with annual billing, for a workload of 20 hosts and 100 GB of telemetry per month across APM, logs and infrastructure. Your numbers will vary with your workload - the pricing page publishes every rate so you can do the math for your own fleet.
What happens when I go over my allowance?
Paid plans are never ingest-blocked: overage bills at the published per-GB and per-host rates, you get alerts at 80%, 100% and 150% of allowance, your first overage invoice is automatically waived, and you can set a spend cap that pauses ingest instead of billing you. The Free plan simply pauses at 5 GB and is never billed.
